I am absolutely a fan of independent publishing in all its forms - independent/community booksellers, independent publishers - anything that works against monolithic, herd-mentality, corporate mega-media. Whenever possible, I try to feed my book-addiction in ways that sustain the life, vigor, and rawness of the written word. Nevertheless, I'm also a fan of saving money, and sometimes the two commitments don't always work together. So while I'm not endorsing anything about Wal-Mart beyond this specific service, if you're looking for a good-to-great deal on new copies of current books, try Wal-Mart's online bookstore. In searching for two items of relatively academic interest, one of which is rather difficult to find, I found BOTH at Wal-Mart and saved 40% off the list price! Not all the titles have that much savings, but most have at least 10%. And you can find a surprisingly vast range of titles beyond what you find on the shelves of your local World's Largest Retailer outpost.
So, whenever possible, support the Seminary Coop and other independent booksellers. But when saving money must override other considerations, Wal-Mart's worth a try.
