Google now has groups.
Maybe you knew this already, but Google recently announced that users can now form email list groups in Google Groups, which is in beta. Though the set-up is [presumably, as I have not yet joined or started a group] similar to the rest, its features do incorporate Google technology. The press release indicates the following:
