When I was just beginning this blog (so long ago), I chanced across a wise UofCer (whose name I now forget) who on her blog advised future bloggers to beware how adding comments changes the nature of one's blog. As I've reflected on that, I can see many ways in which that could be true. It's part of the complex phenomenon that the future field of Internet cultural studies will call "the Internet persona."
However, there seem also to be benefits to comments, at least insofar as they offer a chance to open a blog up for dialogue. And so, using Bloggers new features, I've decided to add comments on a post-by-post basis. That way, for the vast majority of posts that I offer in the spirit of responsible intellectual engagement, you are welcome to respond. But for those posts whose value to me in sharing lies in something than conversation and critique, no comments are welcome (at least not on the blog).
