When I need to work with the Bible in English, I primarily rely on the NRSV. The JPS Tanakh is great for the First Testament. Because I do not share in some of the values of the NIV translators, I don't rely on it too much - though at many points it is superior to the NIV.
Thankfully, though, I found some very helpful articles showing why the NIV itself is untrustworthy.
