(Note: At the dinner some key emendations were made, which I have likewise made here.)
Instructions:
1. Choose one or more of the following questions to answer at your turn.
2. Interpretations may be sought from Jeremy. Interpretations will be final! :-)
The Questions
- If you had to power to choose one thing (idea, value, skill…) that all 1st-graders would be taught in school, what would it be and why?
- If one book (or perhaps work of music or visual art) already created could be attributed to you as its author, which would you want and why?
- Tomorrow (and forever thereafter) all of humanity will speak the same language, which you get to choose. Which would it be and why?
- For the next 10 years of your life, you are going to be the editor of any magazine or scholarly journal (but not newspaper) you want. Which one and why?
- A. In an act of anachronism (which the Creator is allowed!), God decides to insert one written work [or work of visual art or music] of your selection (of any length and from any time in history) into the Christian Bible, to be recognized by all Christians as canonical. What work will you tell God to include and why?
B. Which single book of the present Bible would you omit in order to include your work from 5a?(adapted from The Atlantic Monthly, March 2004)
- After a slight change in procedure, in six months, you will announce the person you’ve selected for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004. Who will it be and why?
